DS17’s high school economics class had a discussion about this recently. It’s really interesting to see how the airlines price seats. It’s a partial explanation for the emergence of the “last minute deal” sites. The last few available seats on a plane are so incredibly expensive that often times they’ll go unsold. The last minute sites allow the airlines to grab a few extra dollars on the last day (it’s like what happens to scalpers when an event isn’t sold out)

Awesome that you paid LESS than what the price is now!

I was just wondering what in the heck is going on w/ airfare! I checked 4 months out and the ticket is $400 vs. what I usually pay in the $175-$250 range. I checked closer to now and it is still REALLY high! I haven’t paid that much EVER to go to Orlando. I may have to cancel the March trip if fares do not drop.
